In UMFA’S newest ACME Lab,The Sound of Water: Woodcuts by Stanton Macdonald-Wright, viewers are invited to investigate the dynamic relationship between language and visual art.
Stanton Macdonald-Wright created images illustrating haikus from revered Japanese poets throughout history, connecting Eastern and Western cultural expressions and seeking pure forms of artistic truth. With this series of haiga, Macdonald-Wright offers a visually spectacular fusion of Modern art and Japanese poetry.
In this ACME Lab, experience three electric, never-before-seen woodcuts from UMFA’s permanent collection alongside original artworks created by five local artists.
Feeling inspired by what you’ve seen? Interact with this exhibition by creating and illustrating a haiku of your own.

[more+]January 18, 2024-August 3, 2024
This exhibition explores the connections between lineage, community, and the environment. Whether actively or passively, we each inherit bloodlines, culture, and land. The passage of time reveals the impact of this inheritance. We see it in our bodies, the ways we interact with nature, and what we choose to pass on to future generations.
In 2019, a group of multi-disciplinary artists met in Iceland for a collaborative and creative experience. During this gathering, the artists explored the idea of inheritance in conversation, music, and art-making. The artworks in this exhibition are the result of the artists’ interactions and collaborations during that experience.

[more+]Perhaps the most important collectors of contemporary art in Logan, Utah, David and Terry Peak have been collecting since 1996. Part of the allure for them comes from the traveling they do so in pursuit of collecting art and from the artists they meet. One of their favored destinations is Santa Fe, New Mexico and they have collected more art there from galleries and artists than elsewhere. The Peak’s have come to know many of the artists they have collected and it is clear that they greatly enjoy these personal connections, which has given them more insight into the artists work, enabling them to identify and collect in more discerning ways.
David Peak is a Physics professor and Terry Peak is a professor of Social Work at Utah State University. They have a proclivity for figurative painting, geometric sculpture, and work incorporating mathematical and scientific systems. The strength of their collection is in its contemporary landscape painters of the Southwest like David Barbero, Javier Barbosa, Jason Berger, Sarah Bienvenu, Charlie Burk, Joel Greene, Elaine Holien, Randy Hasson, Dan Namingha, Woody Shepherd, and Julian Sibony and the work they collect by these artists is bold and full of life and color. Of additional note is their sculptural collection, characterized mainly by work that is organic and geometric and includes artists such as Mark Castator, Paula Castillo, Gretchen Ewert, Jun Kaneko, Bret Price, Frank Riggs, Kevin Robb, and Sheryl Zacharia.
Generous supporters of Utah State University, the Peak’s have named the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art as the beneficiary of a large portion of their art collection. The Peak’s collection adds an important component of work by contemporary artists from the Western United States, and in particular New Mexico, thereby greatly expanding the Museum’s reach in this region. In addition, the Peak’s donated funds in support of the Museum’s exhibition space. In recognition of this gift the Museum has named one of its galleries The David and Terry Peak Gallery.

[more+]This retrospective is a way of honoring Jane Catlin’s career as an artist and teacher which has lasted more than forty years. During that time she has produced a remarkable body of work, evolving from her early figural paintings of the 1990s to the semi-abstraction of images of biological forms and processes from the last decade or so. Though the style and content has gradually shifted and changed, not least because of the profound influence of her travels through Japan, Korea, Africa, and Canada, what this overview reveals is a compelling consistency in her themes and concerns, most notably a fascination with biology, ecology, and the environment. The often strange and mysterious imagery that results from her visual meditations evoke, and give voice to, the mutating world and serve as a reminder of both the beauty and fragility of the nature around us. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see some of her most significant works collected together for the first time.
Jane Catlin was born in 1951 and grew up in Ogden, Utah in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains. After graduating with a BFA in Painting at Utah State University in 1986, she went on to study at the Rhode Island School of Design, receiving her MFA in Painting in 1989. She began her teaching career at USU in 1994 and retired in 2020, being awarded the title of Emeritus Professor of Drawing and Painting.
David C. Wall, PhD Associate Professor of Film and Visual Studies.

[more+]Miki Hayakawa (1899-1953), Hisako Hibi (1907-1991), and Miné Okubo (1912-2001) were three of the most active and visible female artists of Japanese descent of the pre-World War II generations. Their critically acclaimed careers spanned eight decades and four US states, yet the full extent of their work has been understudied in 20th-century American art history. Pictures of Belonging is an unprecedented (re)introduction featuring more than 100 artworks by these trailblazers, with many on public display for the first time. By tracing their prewar, wartime, and postwar artistic production, Pictures of Belonging illuminates an expanded view of the “American experience” by women who used artmaking to “take up space,” to make their presence and existence visible, and to assert that they belonged.
Hibi and Okubo were unjustly imprisoned at Topaz near Delta, Utah, from 1942 until 1944/45. Their depictions of life in Utah during this time add special significance to this exhibition at the UMFA, the first venue to host Pictures of Belonging on its national tour.
The traveling version of Pictures of Belonging is curated by Dr. ShiPu Wang and is organized by the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, California. This exhibition is made possible through support from the Terra Foundation for American Art and is supported, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts.

[more+]We are proud to present the captivating historical images of Lewis Baltz’s Park City series alongside the work of contemporary artist Rodrigo Valenzuela, who explores issues of labor, alienation, and displacement.
Throughout the 1970s, Lewis Baltz captured the changing landscape he observed throughout different parts of the American West. Kimball Art Center will present the captivating historical images of Lewis Baltz (1945-2014) from his celebrated Park City (1980) series, comprised of 102 photographs taken from 1978 to 1979 in a then-developing section of the city. This series has long been considered one of the central portfolios in Baltz’s groundbreaking career and highlights in documentary fashion the rapid building that was taking place during this Park City’s reinvention as a ski resort town.
Complementing these captivating historical images will be photographs and installations by contemporary artist Rodrigo Valenzuela (b. 1982, Chile) who, taking inspiration from Baltz‘s work, similarly captures our built landscape while also exploring issues of labor, alienation, and displacement. In his works American Type and Hedonic Reversal, Valenzuela directly responds to Baltz’s stark images of housing and commercial developments. Building three-dimensional assemblages with two-by-fours and other raw materials in his studio and then photographing them, Valenzuela highlights the labor inherent in constructing our cities and the undocumented labor force that is often relegated to the shadows in our society.

Nevertheless, German Expressionist art of the era is saturated with biblical subjects and religious themes. In Reconciled: Biblical Imagination in German Expressionist Prints, you'll explore how artists like Max Beckmann, Lovis Corinth, Kathë Kollwitz, Otto Dix, Christian Rohlfs, Schmidt-Rottloff, Vassily Kandinsky, and Edvard Munch found meaning in and bared their souls through biblical themes and narratives as they endured the tumult, upheavel, and conflict of early 20th-century Germany.
This exhibition is organized by the Bowden Collections.

Counterpoint features 60 of these works from the MOA collection by artists including Warhol, Lichtenstein, Haworth, Ruscha, Gerardia, Grebenak, Indiana, and more.
Step back in time to explore this explosion of Pop, Op, "high," "low," activist, commercial, and cosmic art. As you do, you'll wonder at how much has changed (and how much is still the same).
This exhibition is a companion to Off Kilter, On Point: Art of the 1960s from Colorado State University, opening at the Museum of Art in June 2024.

Velázquez. El Greco. Goya. Sorolla. Zurbarán. Marvel at the wonders of the Spanish-speaking world from Andalusia to the Andes Mountains as you look through the eyes of some of the greatest artists who ever lived.
We invite you on a pilgrimage through 4,000 years of art history. In Spain and the Hispanic World, you'll witness prehistoric Iberian earthenware, Roman-era sculpture, medieval illuminated manuscripts, Catholic liturgical artifacts, maps from the Age of Exploration, Latin American jewelry, and masterpieces from iconic Spanish artists from across the centuries. Through more than 150 artworks, relics, and antiquities, you will be left in awe of the richness, the majesty, and the glory of Spain and the hispanic world.
Presented for the first time in Utah, this blockbuster exhibition is organized by the Hispanic Society Museum and Library, home of the most extensive Spanish art collection outside of Spain. It opens at the BYU Museum of Art on January 26, 2024.
