[more+]What emotions do certain images or words stir within you? How do you visualize the words that you hear or the images they conjure in your mind? In UMFA’S newest ACME Lab,The Sound of Water: Woodcuts by Stanton Macdonald-Wright, viewers are invited to investigate the dynamic relationship between language and visual art.
Stanton Macdonald-Wright created images illustrating haikus from revered Japanese poets throughout history, connecting Eastern and Western cultural expressions and seeking pure forms of artistic truth. With this series of haiga, Macdonald-Wright offers a visually spectacular fusion of Modern art and Japanese poetry.
In this ACME Lab, experience three electric, never-before-seen woodcuts from UMFA’s permanent collection alongside original artworks created by five local artists.
Feeling inspired by what you’ve seen? Interact with this exhibition by creating and illustrating a haiku of your own.

[more+]January 18, 2024-August 3, 2024
This exhibition explores the connections between lineage, community, and the environment. Whether actively or passively, we each inherit bloodlines, culture, and land. The passage of time reveals the impact of this inheritance. We see it in our bodies, the ways we interact with nature, and what we choose to pass on to future generations.
In 2019, a group of multi-disciplinary artists met in Iceland for a collaborative and creative experience. During this gathering, the artists explored the idea of inheritance in conversation, music, and art-making. The artworks in this exhibition are the result of the artists’ interactions and collaborations during that experience.

Velázquez. El Greco. Goya. Sorolla. Zurbarán. Marvel at the wonders of the Spanish-speaking world from Andalusia to the Andes Mountains as you look through the eyes of some of the greatest artists who ever lived.
We invite you on a pilgrimage through 4,000 years of art history. In Spain and the Hispanic World, you'll witness prehistoric Iberian earthenware, Roman-era sculpture, medieval illuminated manuscripts, Catholic liturgical artifacts, maps from the Age of Exploration, Latin American jewelry, and masterpieces from iconic Spanish artists from across the centuries. Through more than 150 artworks, relics, and antiquities, you will be left in awe of the richness, the majesty, and the glory of Spain and the hispanic world.
Presented for the first time in Utah, this blockbuster exhibition is organized by the Hispanic Society Museum and Library, home of the most extensive Spanish art collection outside of Spain. It opens at the BYU Museum of Art on January 26, 2024.
Materiales de esta exposición también están disponibles en español.
